Godwin Attram has been appointed assistant coach of Ghana's senior national team, the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association confirmed the move on Monday, bringing the 45-year-old former international back into the fold ahead of a key period of fixtures.
Attram replaces Desmond Ofei, who will now focus solely on his role as head coach of Ghana's Under-23 side, the Black Meteors. Ofei is tasked with guiding the Olympic team through its next qualifying campaign.
Attram's return to the setup
This marks a significant return for Attram, who has built a varied coaching career since his playing days ended. He has served within the GFA's youth development structure, including a stint leading the national Under-21 side and working as an assistant with the Black Meteors. At club level, he previously managed Accra Great Olympics, the team where he began his own professional career.
As a player, Attram earned caps for Ghana and had a well-travelled club career. He moved from Great Olympics to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven before playing for Danish side Silkeborg IF and having spells in leagues across North Africa and the Middle East.
Context for the Black Stars
The coaching change comes as the Black Stars look to build momentum. The team's current position in the standings shows them third in their World Cup qualifying group with four points from three matches, having won one, drawn one and lost one. Their recent form shows one win, two draws and two defeats from the last five outings, including a 1-0 loss to Colombia in July. The team's immediate focus is a high-profile away fixture against rivals Ivory Coast on September 24, a key match in the fixtures list. The team will also be without the services of Kamaldeen Sulemana and Marvin Senaya, who are currently sidelined and listed on the injuries page.
