Ghana’s football federation (GFA) is actively seeking a new head coach for the Black Stars after the short‑term contract of Carlos Queiroz expired following the 2026 World Cup. According to GhanaSoccernet, the GFA confirmed that discussions are currently underway to appoint a successor to Queiroz. Gideon Fosu, a member of the GFA Executive Committee, told Citi Sports that the national team will not remain without a permanent manager for long and that a coach will be installed before the next official competitions.
Fosu said, “We are still in discussion, we are continuing negotiations. I am certain that at the appropriate time the president of the federation will announce the name of the next head coach of the Black Stars.” He added that the urgency of the situation is heightened by the upcoming international fixtures, stating, “What I can affirm with certainty is that we will have a coach at the helm of the team.”
Queiroz, who arrived in April, was appointed with a mission focused on the 2026 World Cup. The 73‑year‑old Portuguese coach succeeded Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March. Queiroz’s contract was short‑term and did not extend beyond the World Cup. He earned $80,000 per month during his tenure, a figure that reportedly complicated negotiations for a contract extension.
The new coach will need to act quickly. Ghana must resume competition in September with the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Black Stars are placed in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia. After missing the previous AFCON edition in Morocco, the national side will aim to secure a spot in the final tournament.
The GFA’s statement emphasized that a permanent manager would be named before the qualifiers, ensuring the team is prepared for the demanding schedule. The federation’s executive committee remains in talks with potential candidates, but no official appointment has yet been announced.
With the qualifiers set to begin in September, Ghana’s football authorities are under pressure to finalize a coaching appointment that can guide the team through the qualification campaign and beyond. The next head coach will inherit a squad that has recently missed a major continental tournament and will need to rebuild momentum for the 2027 AFCON.
