Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana for the second time this year. The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with the Portuguese manager to terminate his contract.

This decision follows a difficult pair of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last month. The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a 4-2 defeat by Gambia, results which accelerated the end of Queiroz's latest, brief tenure. The team's next competitive match is a key AFCON 2027 qualifier against Somalia on November 18.

A short second chapter

Queiroz, 73, first took charge of Ghana in April, mere weeks before the 2026 World Cup. He guided the team to the knockout stages, where they were eliminated by Colombia, before resigning his post. In a surprising reversal, he signed a new contract on September 2, only to depart again after those two qualifying losses.

In an open letter published by the association, Queiroz acknowledged the circumstances. "This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else," he said.

The coach also paid tribute to his players, urging the nation to get behind them. "I pay tribute to the players of the Black Stars. Thank you to all of them who represented Ghana with courage, commitment and pride," Queiroz wrote. He expressed his belief that the team possesses the talent and spirit to overcome the current challenges and succeed.

Looking ahead

His exit leaves the national team without a head coach as they prepare for their next AFCON 2027 qualifier. The Ghana Football Association has not yet announced a successor, meaning the search for a new manager begins immediately with that match in mind. The federation stated that the process to appoint a new technical lead will be conducted with urgency and thoroughness, given the proximity of the next fixture. The full squad list for the upcoming international window will be available on our squad page once it is announced by the federation.
