Anthony Baffoe has withdrawn from the committee searching for the next permanent head coach of Ghana's national team. The Ghana Football Association confirmed the former international's decision, which leaves the selection panel with four members as it works towards a critical deadline.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum relayed the news, stating that committee chairman Fred Pappoe had informed the Executive Council. "There was no reason given," Asante Twum said. "All he said was that Tony had withdrawn." Baffoe was appointed to the five-person committee on October 2, just one day after the end of Carlos Queiroz's tenure.
Search committee reshaped
The committee, established by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, was formed in response to Ghana's poor start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast and 4-2 to The Gambia, results which led to Queiroz's departure. The remaining members-Stephen Appiah, Agbesi Dzakpasu, Faisal Chibsah, and chairman Fred Pappoe-must now identify a permanent successor. Their recommendation is expected before Ghana's final qualifying matches next year, with a submission deadline set for October 9, 2026.
Baffoe declined his role due to a miscommunication over his appointment. His withdrawal introduces a new element of uncertainty into a process that carries significant weight for the national team's immediate future.
Interim setup for November
With the committee's work ongoing, an interim technical team led by Kim Lars Björkegren will oversee the upcoming fixtures. He will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda has been appointed as the goalkeeping coach. This temporary setup faces a pressing task: reviving Ghana's qualifying hopes when they host Somalia on November 11. A return leg against Somalia follows just four days later on November 15.
The pressure is on to stabilise the team and build momentum after the disappointing opening losses. The committee's eventual choice will be tasked with steering the Black Stars through the remainder of the qualifiers and beyond, aiming to restore confidence and competitive results.
